Ever since Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus
Christ Superstar opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre
in 1971, audiences around the world have been transfixed by the
show—a rock spectacle that recounts the last seven days in
the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Packed with hit songs including “I
Don’t Know How To Love Him” and “Superstar,”
the musical is now touring the U.S., starring Sebastian Bach (pictured,
with disciples), in the title role and Carl Anderson as Judas. Bach,
formerly of the band Skid Row, has appeared on Broadway in Jekyll
& Hyde and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and
has toured around the world with his band Sebastian Bach and Friends.
Anderson performed the role of Judas in the 1972 national tour,
on Broadway, in Los Angeles and in the 1973 film version of Jesus
Christ Superstar, garnering Golden Globe nominations and NAACP’s
Award for Theater.
The touring production is directed by Kevin Moriarty, with choreography
by David Wilder—both based on the direction and choreography
by Gale Edwards and Anthony Van Laast from the 2000 Broadway revival.
Scenic design is by Peter J. Davison, costume design by Roger Kirk,
lighting design by Mark McCullough and sound design by Jon Gottlieb
and Phil Allen. Jesus Christ Superstar is produced by the
Really Useful Superstar Company, Inc. and Nederlander Presentations,
Inc., in association with Terry Allen Kramer. Executive producer
is Tom McCoy/McCoy Rigby Entertainment.
The show hits Atlanta’s Fox Theatre April 1-6; the Mechanic
Theatre in Baltimore April 8-13; Boston’s Wang Center for
the Performing Arts April 15-20; Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte,
NC April 22-27; and the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts
