SYRACUSE, NY—J.R. Clancy will present a session at this year’s USITT entitled “Promote Safe Sets - Train, Inspect, & Maintain Your Rigging System.” The session will address the necessary steps to reduce risk and increase understanding of safety protocols and precautions that need to be taken backstage.  Although the session focuses on rigging, the techniques can be used for all types of safety training. The session will take place Friday, March 20, at 8:00 a.m.

“As we take on more complex productions, and add new equipment to our theatres, we need to look at how this affects backstage safety,” said Tom Young, vice president of marketing for J. R. Clancy. “With changing technology, regular training on new equipment and safety procedures is essential, maintenance requirements change, and inspections become more important than ever. Our panel discussion will cover how training, inspection, and maintenance fit into every theatre’s backstage safety plan.”

The panel participants combine many decades of experience in rigging safety:
•    Van Phillips, one of the nation’s leading theatre consultants and a principal with Jones & Phillips Associates, Inc., since 1974, brings to the table his experience with more than 250 theatrical productions.
•    Eric McAfee of J. R. Clancy, Inc., is an ETCP certified theatre rigger who works closely with customers to select the right equipment for performance spaces of every size.
•    Tom Young, J. R. Clancy vice president of marketing, has been involved in engineering and selling theatrical rigging for more than 30 years.
The session is open to all registrants for the USITT Conference and Stage Expo, March 18-21 at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The first 50 registrants will receive a free Promote Safe Sets t-shirt.
