The Broadway League recently announced their year-end numbers, which revealed they grossed a record $1.08 billion for the 2010-2011 season. They’re not sitting on their laurels, however. Recognizing that the internet has become the number one place to buy tickets to a Broadway show, the Broadway League is releasing the ILoveNYTheater app for all iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch), based on the League's ILoveNYTheater.com website. The app will let theatergoers purchase tickets at all price points to Broadway shows direct from the theatres' official ticketing offices without broker markups.
Had a bit of an internal debate over this story—most apps mentioned here are considered “gear” stories—they’re tools for you to use to make better theatre. I came to the realization about this piece of “gear” this morning, though: This won’t help you make better theatre in a direct way. It will help you see more theatre (which is good, don’t get me wrong) but it’s not going to help you in producing a play. So I’m making this a news story—and taking yesterday’s release from Theatre Development, announcing their TKTS App is now available for Windows 7 phones (along with Android and iOS devices) making it a news story as opposed to a gear story. This does raise another question though—which app would you use more? The one that links to the discounted TKTS booth, or one that links to a show’s box office?

For the past six years, the Internet has been reported as the most popular method of ticket purchase. According to League data from the 2009-2010 season, 34% of theatre patrons reported purchasing their tickets online, a 363% increase over 10 years ago.
Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, says, “Broadway is available more times and more ways, and it’s becoming easier and easier for theatergoers to get the best seats at the best prices from official sources. Great seats are available at every price point (from premium tickets to student rush tickets) and are easy to buy online, by phone, or in person at theatre box offices.”
